The Pink Ribbon and Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness month, spanning the month of October, is in full effect with people showing their support in a number of ways. Whether it is a pink ribbon on your lapel or professional athletes sporting pink shoes, one thing is for sure, this is a cause people care about.  The color pink has become synonymous with breast cancer awareness, but not everyone knows how this came to be, or what it signifies. “A confluence of events — the pink ribbon, the color, the press, partnering with Elizabeth Hurley, having Estee Lauder as an advertiser in some magazines and persuading…health and beauty editors to do stories about breast health…” contributed greatly to this association.  Evelyn Lauder, daughter of Estee Lauder, recalled that she had to explain her pink pin to people at its inception.  However, three years after that first pin was distributed “a flight attendant noted [the pin] on Lauder’s lapel and said, 'I know that’s for breast cancer,' and since then, the color pink and breast cancer have been synonymous.

$330 million has been raised in breast cancer awareness as a direct result of this campaign.  Who knew the color pink could compel people to give so freely? If you have not done so already,  put on your pink ribbon and show support. Every person can make a difference!
